Testicle Treat – Wonky World

It is common knowledge that testicles from a variety of animals are regarded as a culinary treat. However, the last thing you expect when the chef says he is going to serve testicles, is that the said testicles will be his own!

Yes, you have read correctly, the chef in question, Mao Sugivama, had his meat and two veg surgically removed, then served them up with a few mushrooms and a bit of parsley, to five diners who had paid around 250 euros a head. This was a nut roast that wouldn’t attract a single vegetarian. As for why… well Mao describes himself as an ‘asexual’ person with no interest in either sex, so we can only assume, saw his bits as surplus to requirements.

Scrotum serving Sugivama opened up a world of publicity and interest when he made just one ‘tweet’ on April 8th… “I am offering my male genitals (full penis, testes, scrotum) as a meal for 100,000 yen. Will prepare and cook as the buyer requests, at his chosen location.”

So it was that just a few short days after his 22nd birthday, mad as a hatter Mao had surgery to remove all the said parts ready for cooking. Six people had paid the required amount to partake, however, only five turned up and were served up stumpy Sugivama’s severed tackle. The venue was a restaurant and the place was packed to the rafters with people anxious to see the consumption of Mao’s bits.

In most countries this would be an illegal act of cannibalism, however Japan has no such law and as only consenting adults were involved the police (who had received several complaints about the event) could do nothing about it.

Next time you’re in downtown Tokyo, make sure you check the ingredients closely if your decide to go for the Coq Au Vin!
