The old castle up the hill continues to deteriorate much to everyone’s chagrin, which is why new joy in the form of one million euros to prop up the ancient place is sweeping through the town.
Who’s putting up the loot? The Initiative for Sustainable Tourism chose the castle as one of its projects, which means they cover 60% of the cost. The Town Hall then cast around for more help and found it in the Ministry of Fomento (Foment: foster) which agreed to cover the remaining forty.
The castle is in real danger of coming down, with many cracks and forgotten neglected areas. Once restored and the ground below shored up, officials are hoping to improve the town’s tourist input by highlighting the castle for the jewel that it is.
