Hello everyone and welcome to February issue of the Alpujarra Angle!
Yes, that white stuff in Sierra de Lújar is snow! And yes, it was snowing up here in Lanjarón not that long ago to everybody’s delight! Only a thin layer over the roofs but it made a nice wintertime postcard, I must to say.
I hear people complaining about the weather, the rain, the cold up here in the mountains but hey, I’d prefer to see the the Rules Dam like this, rather than bone dry this summer, wouldn’t you? I’m not too keen on negotiating the muddy main street of Lanjarón in the rain but hey… Is winter, right?

Talking about mud in Lanjarón, work on the main street seems to follow no logic with trenches being opened and filled, and then re-opened – anybody would think that they are digging for treasure!
Anyway, despite the downpours, which have logically caused the work to grind to a halt over long periods, progress appears to have been made – they are marking where the pavements are to go! Let’s see how long it takes them to lay them
This is not before time, mind, as the patience of the locals is threadbare and all are pending the ‘miracle of completion,’ before the spas are due to reopen when the season begins.
During these past months I have come across the odd tourist or two, who appear to think twice about exploring the town and jump back into their cars again. Honestly, though since they shut the hotels and began work, the town has resembled a Western ghost town, minus the tumbleweed. Only the locals remain, and on top of that, with this winter cold, not many venture beyond their own front doors.
Well, let’s see if these Northern European cold fronts move away and spring appears!
