Salobreña castle has been under fire this month, due to its general state of disrepair. Oh, and then for the cheek of charging visitors 2.95 euros to walk around its crumbling grounds. Those in the know claim that it is not only a complete embarrassment, but dirty and dangerous, without signs warning tourists of the hazardous zones. Through sheer neglect, vegetation has dried up and cracks and holes abound making it an unsuitable place to bring children.
Worse still however, are the large cracks that have been appearing over time, not just in the castle grounds, but spreading further into houses in the old town. Residents have been getting worried for some time now, but finally the opposition party have called for the council to put a stop on all building work in the area.
There’s bickering at the town hall though (aggravated by a lack of air-conditioning at the meeting to save money) wherein the Town Planning Councillor, Manual Perez Cobos, insists that he has thrice sent technicians to assess the area, and not once have they come back with the problems as stated by the opposition. The council do however recognise the problem with the state of the castle grounds, but are at a loss as to where to find the seven million euros needed to carry out the renovations.
