Thanks to the crisis, one of the few business sectors that is growing in the province of Málaga is the illegal contraband in tobacco and alcohol. Of course, Málaga isn’t the only province where this is happening, nor is the phenomenon anything new, because smuggling is as old as the hills and always flourishes when times are hard.

El Chucho Topped Up

On the 22nd of March the Nerja Town Hall approved a motion in a Plenary Meeting of the Town Council to send of a request to Demarcación de Costas de Andalucía Mediterráneo to have the town’s beaches sorted out, which had been badly damaged by winter gales, namely El Chucho.
Sewage Treatment Plant for Nerja

The Mayor of Nerja, José Alberto Armijo (PP), announced that things could be moving, regarding the EDAR (Estación Depuradora de Aguas Residuales, or sewage treatment plant), which is about time as Nerja is just about the only town on the Costa del Sol that doesn’t have one. The budget amounts to 40.5m euros.

Five policemen are in the process of being tried in Mijas, charged with drug trafficking. These members of the Policia Local intercepted 170 kilos of hashish, but instead of turning the confiscated drugs over, they allegedly loaded them into patrol cars, took them to a private address and set about selling them.

HMS Ledbury Visit

Members and guests of Almuñecar Branch of the Royal Naval Association recently had the opportunity to visit a Royal Navy vessel, HMS Ledbury, while she was alongside in Málaga. The ship, which is also the oldest in the RN at 31, also has the dubious honour of being the first RN ship to deploy during 2012, having left Portsmouth in early January.

The body of Málaga lawyer, Salvador Andrés Reina was found in the boot of his car near the bus station in the city last Friday. The find brings to an end, in the worst possible way, the uncertainty felt by the family over his disappearance. The 50-year-old lawyer’s body showed signs of having suffered a violent death.

A transsexual, who is serving time at the Alhaurín provincial prison (Málaga) for having committed 48 serious or very serious misdemeanors, kicked the crap out of a female prison guard, after coming back from a hormone-treatment session as part of a sex-change process to become a woman.
Illegal Phone Taps

A man, who had already spent 18 months in prison, had his prison sentence revoked because the phone-tap evidence on which lead to his being found guilty was ruled ‘illegal.’
