Flood Courses

Talking of the rain-loaded gales, the Motril fire service has been receiving special courses on how to deal with flooding, seeing as two out of every ten call-outs during last year required them to pump out floodwater from basements, etc. All, told such call-outs numbered 75 during 2010.

Drainage System Overhaul

A total of 18m euros is going to be spent on improving the rain drainage system in Motril. The funds will be found from raising a surcharge on the normal water bills, so that within five years there will be enough to carry out this much-needed work.

The Earth Moves

It’s pretty much all downhill from here, No pun intended, but we have mudslides all over. Reports are flooding in (groan) of walls subsiding, land sliding down hills, so-called dry walls slipping, etc., etc. There have been problems ranging from La Caleta, where a local car park has been threatened by stones falling from 30 metres and crushing cars below, to Molvízar, where huge rocks fell from a private property wall to block the Coto 200.

Civic Centre Repairs

The Mayor, at a recent Town Council Meeting made an announcement that work was to commence on the repairs to the auditorium of the Civic Centre in La Herradura.

Basements Swamped

A tremendous problem during this prolonged rainfall has been the rising water table, as mentioned in last month’s Seaside Gazette.

Rising Watertable Problems

One of the problems produced by the constant rainfall is the rise in the water-table, which has flooded out basements in Almuñécar and La Herradura, one of which is the Aquarium, which had to be closed down for about a week to pump the encroaching water out.

Flooding in Motril

It was Motril’s turn for flooding – and when you see people canoeing through a street, it’s a pretty good indication that it’s been raining a bit on the active side.

Exactly two years ago (from the writing of this article) Almuñécar experienced its worse flooding in 60 years, resulting in one death and considerable damages to the infrastructure of both Almuñécar and La Herradura, yet…
