A tremendous problem during this prolonged rainfall has been the rising water table, as mentioned in last month’s Seaside Gazette. Many, many buildings with cellars, basements, underground parking have had to pump out invading water, most of which is entering via the drains. One of the worst hurt areas has been the P-4, which is hardly surprising as it is build on the old vega, which it turn is merely a silted up estuary.
One such building affected is the new church building there, whose basement had to be evacuated – it is used to store Semana Santa thrones and other paraphernalia. Accordingly, the PSOE, which considers that it is obvious that these buildings were not constructed properly, is demanding that something should be done; i.e., measures be taken.
The measures that they are calling for is for the Town Hall to force the construction companies that built the P-4 to waterproof the foundations properly. Strangely enough, none of our political parties are demanding that economical retribution should be levied on the political, decision takers of the moment for permitting the urban development on land with a propensity for flooding –probably because they all, whole heartedly backed the P-4 development project.
