Political Squabble over Aquarium

On the 19th of December the Mayor of Almuñécar, Trinidad Herrera, declared that the lease terms for the aquarium had been a “chollo,” meaning a bargain-cum-cushy number. The implication was that the Benavides administration had favoured the leaseholder, Aliart Engineering S.L. to a suspicious degree.

Somebody’s Stolen the Winches!

On Velilla beach in Almuñécar, next to the breakwater, there are manual winches for hauling small fishing boats from the water, up onto the beach… or at least, there used to be, as somebody has stolen them.

Calls for Town Hall Intervention

Eighteen workers from the combined staff of the Acuario de Fauna Mediterránea and the Parque Ornitológico Loro Sexi; both in Almuñécar, demonstrated in front of the Town Hall, calling for the Mayor to take action.

Aquarium Hosts Live Music

The Acuario, which is the biggest in Andalucia in terms of water volume, will be offering three live concerts during this month as part of its Concierto Nocturno del Acuario.

Rising Watertable Problems

One of the problems produced by the constant rainfall is the rise in the water-table, which has flooded out basements in Almuñécar and La Herradura, one of which is the Aquarium, which had to be closed down for about a week to pump the encroaching water out.

Counting the Blessings

Whatever is covered later on in the Almuñécar section, it is probably a good idea to take a stock check of what we have. You see, it doesn’t matter whether you came here 40, 30, 20, 10, or just 5 years ago – Almuñécar is still very much a privileged place to live in.

European Sharks’ Week

A week (10th – 18th October) will be dedicated to European sharks and their plight – and we don’t mean the ones in suits.
