The company Ocean Ecostructures launched a project in the Marina del Este to support marine biodiversity April last year and the results are proving positive.

After a year underwater, the six biomimetic structures installed at two points in the port’s entrance channel host twenty-six species, compared to the eleven identified on the port wall used as a reference, representing a 136% increase in species wealth.

More simply put, they started breeding areas for different species at the mouth of the marina and they have not only taken but have also grown considerably, Considering that there were only 11 types of small marine life living on the port wall below the surface, the boost has more than doubled the number of species.

The units, installed in April 2025 are designed to make it easier for different marine organisms to find surfaces to settle and grow on. Their evolution is analysed periodically to understand how the habitat forms and how the different creatures coexist.

Manuel Raigón, Managing Director of the Marina del Este explained, “The results allow us to see with data how the project has evolved over all these first months. Finding more species is important, but so is verifying that an increasingly diverse community is forming. Without a doubt, this is a way of showing that port infrastructure can incorporate solutions that favour marine life.”

In short, the project is to find out if the artifical structure of a marina can favour the existence and growth of marine life within it.
