The refurbishment project to provide the self-cleaning toilets on Salobreña beach is complete, finished off with new seaside-themed murals that provide not only decoration but also exterior insulation against summer heat.

Now that they are finished, the toilet modules will stay open all year round from 08:00h to 20:30h.

The self-cleaning toilets are not new but have faced constant operating problems since installation, requiring workers to convert the system from automatic to manual and treat the steel for rust.

The Town Hall was unable to sort out the toilets sooner because they were tied to a European Union (FEADER) grant condition that prohibited modifications for several years; a restriction which has recently expired.

The Town Hall realised that while these automatic models work well in cities like Málaga, they failed in Salobreña due to high water consumption, rusting, and improper use (e.g., children playing with the doors, power outages, and doors left open).

The local Council is currently using a new grant to replace the oldest toilet modules with modern, efficient, up-to-date units within the coming months.

Finally, and what is not widely known, perhaps, by law the toilets inside all beach bars (chiringuitos) are free for the public to use, regardless of whether they purchase anything from the establishment.
