A flock of Junta bigwigs popped in for a photo-op at the conclusion of the Parque fluvial de Tormentas works on the Rambla de Molvízar.

What they have done is widen the hell out of the rambla were it passes beneath the autovía bridge, more or less, and as the project’s name suggests, it’s to prevent flash floods turning everybody down stream; i.e., Salobreña, into amphibions.

They have cleared and widened a 1.4km stretch of the rambla, equivalent to 12 hectares, and putting in the equivalent of riverbank retaining walls.

This rambla expanse will double as a green area where cyclists and hikers can peddle and stride along a pathway. Now, what will make it ‘green’ is the planting of 500 large trees to provide shade – obviously, they weren’t large when they were planted but it is hoped that they will become so, after you and I are long gone and our grandchildren will be user zimmer frames. Together with these large trees, some 3,000 medium and low-sized bushes and shrubs will also be planted.

How much did it cost and how long did it take? The budget was 1.8m and it took eight months.
