The Motril Councillor for beaches and a host of other departments, José Peña, has summed up how the summer went with respect to the beaches.
José Peña said that for the third year running, residents and visitors have been able to enjoy the Town Council’s Alégrate el verano en Motril programme, with “over a hundred activities for all ages in a wide and varied range of leisure, culture, and entertainment in the form of sports events, live music, and opn-air cinema during the summer months.”
More importantly, of course, there is the question of safety on the beaches and according to Councillor Peña, there were no serious incidents to report; local and state police, together with the lifeguard services, successfully managed the season with zero grave emergencies reported, he said.
The Alégrate el verano en Motril summer programme offered over 100 activities (sports, live music, and summer cinema) over two months, drawing more than 20,000 spectators, he explained.
In fact, out of 650 call-outs attended by the life guards, 400 required medical assistance, 97% of which were treated directly on the beaches inside the lifeguard modules. As well as attending to people with problems, lifeguards carried out over 140 preventive tasks, like warning swimmers about sea conditions and stopping craft with motors (jet-skis and small dinghies) from entering swimming zones..
