The Guardia Civil arrested a man in La Zubia (metropolitan area of Granada), as part of Operación Hoteja, suspected of over 100 fraudulent charges on a bankcard.

The 20-year old man is suspected of obtaining more than 11,200 euros in this fashion, using a cloned bankcard.

The Guardia Civil in La Zubia took charge of the investigation after receiving a complaint on the 2nd of September from the owner of the authentic bankcard

The elderly victim discovered that somebody had been emptying her bank account whilst going over here bank statements. It was then that several online purchases had been made using a bankcard, mostly in a town within the province of Cádiz.

According to the victim, she only used the card to make purchases in La Zubia but that a relative also used it to make online purchases.

Thanks to checks made at the businesses where purchases were made and CCTV footage, the arrested man was clearly identified and suspected of being behind the 136 fraudulent purchases using a cloned bankcard.

During the investigation, it was discovered that on September the 3rd, this same individual had been arrested by the Policía Nacional in Cádiz for fraud linked to the use of bankcards. 

Evidence suggests that the suspected had obtained a cloned card, possibly through a digital platform or via contactless technology. 

Editorial comment: never let your card out of your sight when making a purchase or paying for a service, such as in a restaurant.
