The Asociación de Vecinos del Casco Antiguo de Salobreña said that they will no longer hold meetings with political parties ahead of the 2027 municipal elections.
The reason? They attribute it to being fed up with the lack of solutions to problems that, they claim, have affected the Old Town for decades.
The association points out that this decision is not a response to any partisan stance, but rather to the conviction that the Casco Antiguo has already communicated its main needs on numerous occasions. In other words the town’s political parties already know what they expect from them and that they don’t need reminding, especially if it is going to be ignored again.
It criticises the fact that, during every election period, the Old Town gets visits, and meetings, where politicians make commitments that, once the elections are over, never come about.
So, what are the problems that they have up there that are not being sorted out? Among the pending issues, they point out the deterioration of public spaces, poor cleaning & maintenance, accessibility issues, the condition of streets and infrastructure, and the need to boost commercial activity.
In the view of Asociación de Vecinos del Casco Antiguo, these needs require an “integral, planned, and sustained intervention,” backed by a specific budget and deadlines.
According to the association, they remain willing to meet with public officials when the objective is to address concrete actions, projects, budgets, execution schedules, and solutions for the neighbourhood and not just to hear vague empty promises.
In this regard, the association considers it unnecessary to explain once again during the electoral campaign demands that, it claims, are already well known. Instead, it demands that the parties running in the elections publicly state what actions they propose for the Casco Antiguo, what financial resources they plan to allocate, and within what timeframes they intend to execute them.
The association says that its evaluation will focus on results and the fulfilment of commitments, rather than on electoral pledges.
Editorial comment: it’s a pity that ardent party supporters don’t do the same.
