No, the Government hasn’t come up with a fool-proof way to scare off illegal immigrants from landing because this is the Asociación Amigos de la Playa Nudista Cantarriján (AAPPNC) protesting on Playa Cantarriján.
They are demonstrating in this way to call for the protection of naturism and have petitioned the Town Council to put up signposting stating that it is a nudist beach, thereby avoiding “confusion” amongst those that go down there fully clothed, thinking that it is a normal beach.
The Chairwoman for the AAPPNC, María José Gamero, explained the situation: “There are people who do not know, and when they get down there [Cantarriján] they find that there are nudists, and they get angry; they feel uncomfortable.”
She went on to explain that the beach is filling up with ‘textiles,’ as those devoid of clothing refer to those clad in it. She considers that association members are slowly getting pushed into the far ends of the beach or around the rocks to the cove, which she describes as “ghettos.”
Chairwoman Gamero pointed out that the AAPPNC had already requested before the Junta de Andalucia the signposting of the beach as “nudist,” but it was rejected because it was considered “advertising.” She has announced that they will re-submit the request to the Junta.
On the other hand, the relevant department of the Junta clarified that the regional administration is not responsible for the formal declaration or naming of an area of the coastline as a “nudist beach.”
Finally, Chairwoman insisted that, “Cantarriján has been nudist for five decades” and also criticised the measures taken by two chiringuitos whom she labelled as “anti-nudist.”
