Most of you will have used the Gorgoracha Tunnel on the old road (A-4133) from the north of Motril to Vélez de Benadalla; some might not but it still has an interesting history.
It was built in the mid 19th Century, in 1860, to be precise. In other words, at the same time as the old bridge and tunnel next to Izbor/Acebuches, in the time of Queen Isabel II.

Now the Gorgoracha Tunnel might seem pretty narrow to you, but it was the first tunnel in Spain wide enough for two horse-drawn carriage to cross!
Nowadays, the Túnel de la Gorgoracha has become a backwater infrastructure, although when it was built it was a marvel along the new route from the city of Granada to Motril. Coming down to the coast, once travellers had come out the other side, they were greeted with their first climpse of the sea and the Port of Motril.
It lost importance when they build the N-323 through Los Vados (gorge road) in the 1970s.
In the 1990s, archeologist came across numerous ceramic fragments and burial goods from the Phoenician period; i.e. from the 8th to the 5th Century BC. For those interested, you can actually follow a footpath that goes over the tunnel from one end to the next!
Gorgoracha is little more than a hamlet which used to belong to Motril, but now belongs to Vélez de Benaudalla.
