Alcohol Consumption in Spain

Alcohol consumption is falling sharply in Spanish society, especially amongst young people... and it's not because they think that it is too expensive.

Amongst people aged 15 to 24, regular consumption has gone from 43.8% to 17.9% between 2006 and 2023, representing a reduction of nearly 60%! This is the largest drop in any age group, based on data from the  Encuesta de Salud de España (ESdE2023).

In general, Spain consumes much less alcohol than in 2006, when almost half of the population (48.6%) drank alcoholic beverages at least once a week; now, less than one in three (31.1%) does so.

On the other hand, binge drinking has doubled in the last 10 years for those aged between 25 and 64.

When you break things down into gender and school education-level, there is a higher daily intake amongst men concentrated in low educational levels and situations of unemployment, whereas in women, it’s those with a higher educational level, in regular employment and a higher social status.

In other words, 7.8% of men with basic education consume regularly, compared to 5.7% of those with higher education. But where women are concerned, it’s those with higher education (7.3%) and from a high social class (7.8%) double or triple the rates of women with basic educational levels or from disadvantaged classes.

The favourite drink of regular drinkers is beer (57.1% of drink units consumed), keeping it in first place, and wine (30.9%) However, for those over 65, whin is the first choice. Younger people prefer long drinks; i.e., spirits, besides just beer.

Older people preferring wine, especially in rural areas, makes sense, because coritjeros usually grow their own grape and make their own wine.

Wine was also served at the table at lunch or dinner and kids got wine, too, but highly diluted with lemonade (vino de verano). People now in their 50s were the generation that started going out to pubs and drinking tubos or litronas on the beach in summer.
