The Ministry of Industry & Tourism has declared Lanjarón’s ‘Carrera del Agua’ (Water Race) as a Festival of National Tourist Interest.
This is in recognition of the uniqueness of this particular festival that is celebrated on the night of San Juan, which was originally a pagan ceremony to celebrate the summer equinox.
Secretary Rosario Sánchez said it highlights the participation and involvement of residents to “transform their streets into a great festive stage where residents and visitors turn water into a symbol of coexistence, identity, and renewal, while also maintaining a close connection with the historical and natural heritage of the municipality, historically recognized for the quality of its waters.”
So, now the Carrera del Agua becomes the thirteenth Festival of National Tourist Interest in Andalusia, and number 163 in the country as a whole.
The festival, which dates back to 1980, is one of the most significant events in Lanjarón, attracting more participants each year, including from abroad.
The highlight of the day is the ‘Carrera del Agua’, which is held at midnight on June 23rd into the early morning of the 24th. For one hour, everybody showers each other using buckets, hoses, bottles, or balloons in this fun atmosphere.
But it’s not just about trying to drown each other, because there is also Jamón Serrano sampling, together with local wines, local gastronomy, live musical performances concluding with the traditional bonfires and rituals linked to Midsummer’s Eve.

La secretaria de Estado de Turismo, Rosario Sánchez, ha resuelto favorablemente la concesión de la distinción, destacando la participación y la implicación de vecinos y vecinas para “transformar sus calles en un gran escenario festivo donde residentes y visitantes hacen del agua como símbolo de convivencia, identidad y renovación, manteniendo además una estrecha conexión con el patrimonio histórico y natural del municipio, reconocido históricamente por la calidad de sus aguas”.
Con esta declaración, la ‘Carrera del Agua’ se convierte en la decimotercera Fiesta de Interés Turístico Nacional de Andalucía, y en la número 163 en el conjunto del país.
La festividad es uno de los acontecimientos más relevantes en el municipio granadino, y reúne cada año más visitantes nacionales e internacionales, pasando de ser una tradición local a consolidarse como un referente del panorama festivo nacional. Tiene lugar en la noche de San Juan, y su origen se remonta al año 1980, cuando los vecinos y vecinas de Lanjarón buscaron una forma singular de conmemorar esta fecha mediante el uso festivo del agua.
El acto central es la ‘Carrera del Agua’, que se celebra en la medianoche del 23 al 24 de junio. Durante una hora, todos los participantes se lanzan agua con cubos, mangueras, botellas o globos en un ambiente festivo, pacífico y de convivencia
La fiesta se completa con degustaciones del jamón de la Alpujarra, vinos y gastronomía típica de la zona, actuaciones musicales en directo y las tradicionales hogueras y rituales vinculados a la noche de San Juan.
