Thanks to an EU grant (surprise!) Almuñécar has got its hands on more than a few schekles to provide a biowaste-collection service.
The tidy sum of 161,000 euros will provide the municipality with containers, household bins, compostable bags, and informative material to facilitate the launch of the biowaste service.
The Councilor for the Environment of Almuñécar, Lucía González, kicked off the scheme on the 12th of May with an informative chat about the campaign to get people to separate their organic waste.
Councillor González said, “We have been working on recycling and public awareness to reduce the amount of waste that ends up in the gray container and, subsequently, at the plant.”
This is not only about being eco-conscious on the part of the Town Council, because they have cough up to use the provincial recycling plant, if items are not separated. There is a bio-waste, recycling plant in Motril, which turns it into compost, by the way.
Anyway, she went on to point out that the brown container will appear on the streets in Almuñécar and La Herradura in the coming months, emphasising the importance of residents to know what they are for.
Editorial comment: whilst getting the tonnes of waste that a town produces each day separate is an essential idea, perhaps they are not taking into account that modern kitchens in small flats don’t have room for a variety of separate waste bins. Also, getting supermarket chains to stop using so much plastic might help?
