Archbishop Wary of Vox Pact

The Archbishop of Granada is worried that the PP, who won the regional elections on Sunday but without a governable majority, will pact with the far-right party, Vox.

The reason being is that Archbishop Gil Tamayo considers that Vox will force Juanma Moreno to cut all assistance to immigrants, as like all far-right parties across Europe (including the UK) illegal immigration, (and lets face it, immigrants in general) is the focus of their drive.

For this reason the Archbishop of Granada, took advantage of his presentation of the church-charity, Cáritas‘ annual report to make his feelings on this matter known.

Nobody could accuse the Spanish Catholic Church of being lefty-wefty but rather more inclined to side with right-wing parties, but the Archbishop evidently draws the line with our stiff-armed-salute friends in Vox.

The Archbishop said that he “hopes” that Junta de Andalucía will not make reductions to public resources for social entities. He made it clear that Cáritas is “non-denominational regarding its recipients” and said that immigrants belong to a fragile social stratum that must be helped. In addition, he called for respect for fundamental rights.

He also spoke in favour of the Government’s scheme to legalise thousands of illegal immigrants already in the country, stating that The Church is in favor of it, referring to the need for an increase in the labour force in many productive sectors, especially the primary sector, and stated that it would be very difficult to bring crops to harvest on the Coast or in the Poniente region without the work hands provided by these immigrants.

“Out of justice, their situation must be regulated,” he declared, whilst pointing out that Spaniards should not forget that they themselves were once immigrants too.

Editorial comment: many might consider that the Church should keep out of politics and limit itself to more spiritual matters. However, as Cáritas is key to providing a safety net for those in economic need, perhaps it can be forgiven for raising the voice of alarm when it feels that the task of helping those who need it is in jeopardy.
