The Almuñécar Councilor for Beaches, Lucía González, announced that the municipality has been awarded the 2026 Platinum Broom.

Wonderful, you think, and ask yourself, it’s some kind of flying machine for wicked women, but no its a kind of medal, rated in three levels: Silver, Gold, and Platinum Brooms.

These awards are handed out by ATEGRUS as part of its beach-cleaning system.

Anyway, its panel of judges were full of praise, principally because of Almuñécar’s High-Sea Fleet of skiffs, which ply the treacherous waters off our beaches in search of anything that refuses to sink and bobs about in a truculent manner on the surface, just waiting to assault an unwary bather.

Councillor González said that she was tickled pink over this distinction, stating, that “Receiving the Platinum Broom is a source of immense pride for Almuñécar and La Herradura.”

Part of the reason that she was pink from tickling was because the municipality had just had its Bandera Azul status renewed.

Now, all this broom and flag affair might seem confusing but it all boils down to bathers along the municipality’s beaches being reasonably confident that they can subject their skin to unreasonable amounts of ultra-violet light, thus hastening their wrinkly stage of life, without be accosted by floating or washed-up unpleasantness.
