A man who participated in a gun fight in Alhendin was acquitted by the Provincial Court of Granada, considering that he had acted in self-defence.
This Wild-West occurence took place on the 20th of March 2020 in the town’s Plaza Los Naranjos… in other words, with the Covid lockdown in place. Two of the four ‘gunfighters’ suffered gunshot wounds.

Six years later, with the Spanish judicial system moving at the speed of a striking sloth, it finaly brought them all to trial and handed down minimum penalties, after reaching a plea deal with the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
The sentences were 45 days in prison for making threats for all four of them and an additional three months for two of the defendants for illegal possession of weapons. At the request of the defence and with the Prosecutor’s consent, the court agreed to suspend their prison sentences on the condition that they do not re-offend for three years and pay a fine.
When you compare this slight slap on the wrists with what the Public Prosecutor’s Office originally recommended: ten years’ imprisonment for attempted murder, that is a bit of a come down.
So what the hell actually happened on the said day? One of them, the victim, barricaded himself in his home to protect himself from the other three. Soon shots were exchanged and when it was all over, the Guardia Civil found 112 spent cartidges at the scene as the men were armed with three shotguns and four pistols.
One of the weapons, a shotgun, was legally owned by the individual who was acquitted. The court findings stated: “Seeing his life in serious danger due to the numerous bullet impacts hitting the room where he was hiding (shots aimed directly at him) he opened fire at his attackers with the intention of stopping the attack. He hit one of the defendants in the shoulder and another in the hand and leg, causing them and the remaining attackers to cease their efforts and retreat from the scene.”
