There was a collision yesterday in a tunnel on the N-340 within the municipality of Almuñécar (Punta de La Mona Tunnel).

The accident, involving a van and a motorbike, was reported a little before 11.30h The emergency coordination centre, 112, despatched a helicopter-ambulance to medivac the bike rider, whose injuries are described as “serious.”

A road-vehicle ambulance with paramedics on board was also despatched to treat the van driver who had also been injured in the collision but to a lesser degree.

Although the fire service was called out, it was not necessary to use special cutting tools to free vehicle occupants as nobody had becomed trapped.

According to the DGT, the road was closed in either direction for about an hour before normal traffic flow was resumed. Traffic was probably rerouted along the stretch of old N-340 road which goes around the tunnel.
