A report published on the 26th of March by the Observatory against Domestic & Gender Violence which also covers men murdered by a woman or by a same-sex partner.
On average, according to data collected since 2009, the men murdered are on average 50-years old and lived with their female aggressors (82%), though only 42% were married. The female aggressors in these cases are 43 years old on average.
Historically, the most frequent scenario (74%) is the shared home, and the most common method is a sharp weapon (65.5%). This has happened 121 times in just over 16 years, averaging about 7 victims annually.
On the other hand, last year no murders were recorded, occure within same-sex couples or ex-couples, whether men or women.
A woman is murdered by her partner or ex every six days in Spain according to specific records kept since 2003; this improved slightly in 2025 when it occurred every seven and a half days. In total, 49 women lost their lives to gender-based violence last year.
Children murdered by their fathers were under 10-years old in 74% of cases. In 2025, three died from this cause, totaling 65 victims over the last twelve years. In two of last year’s cases, the aggressor was the biological father, and in the third, it was the mother’s current partner. Two lived with the murderer, and the crime was committed in the shared home, as happens in three out of four such cases.
While sharp weapons are the most used methods in these murder cases, suffocation and poisoning are also used.
Lastly, we come to vicarious violence (violence against children to hurt the mother) each year. These victims are of ‘extreme vulnerability,’ averaging less than seven years of age.
