Invisible Hotel

The Gran Hotel Luna in Motril, announced with great fanfare in 2022, is not invisible; it’s constructrion simply has not even even started.

This is what the minor opposition party in Motril, Centrados en Motril, has pointed out. Their leader, Ángeles López Cano, expressed his “deep dissatisfaction” a-la-Rolling Stones, over a litany of delays and unfullfilled pledges from the Mayor.

Yes, it was in the far off days of 2022, during the International Tourism Trade Fair (Fitur) that the Motril representatives proudly announced the construction of a 4-star hotel, bursting with 150 rooms, representing an investment of 14m euros!

It was going to consolidate Motril as a tourism destination because the town would finally have a hotel in the town centre, instead of down on the beach, where it was closer to Morocco than to the town centre. Admittedly, a slight exaggeration, perhaps.

The Granada-based hotel group, Luna Group, had brandished the plans for a 4,000 sq/m plot before the marvelling eyes of the Councillor for Urban Development; a plot lying between the Parque de los Pueblos de Las Américas and the Cerro de la Cabeza. Bingo!

However, moving at the speed of a striking sloth with the reactions of a dead rattlesnake, deadlines came and went… away. There was even talk of people throwing cement and bricks around in 2025 and that a ceremonial first-stone would be laid by early 2026. However… not a sausage!

Struggling with erectile overkill Centrados en Motril see this as something to gloat about and beat the Mayor over the head with, stating: “We believe the people of Motril deserve a clear explanation regarding these continuous delays. It is necessary to know if this project is truly moving forward, its current administrative status, and the actual timeline for construction.”  Ouch, pass the burn salve!

They asked, “Will this important hotel infrastructure finally materialise, or will it end up becoming a ‘ghost hotel…?” images of Jack Nicholson with an axe come to mind…
