Nerja Town Council has unanimously rejected the Maro Golf, mega-project, which planned to build a golf course, 500 homes, and three hotels on protected agricultural land.
Why this change of tack? Because of a change in the legal status: The project was tossed out because it was processed under an old law (LOUA). The Junta de Andalucía ruled it must now comply with LISTA, a much stricter sustainability law.

Consequently every political party in Nerja (PP, PSOE, & Podemos-IU) voted together to reject the project, citing the need for legal certainty.
This comes as welcome news to those behind the considerable social pushback after the Azucarera Larios, which owns the land, moved to cancel all the land leases (around 400), or better said, refused to renew them. The company was quick to move in heavy machinery to begin demolishing dwellings on the land.
The Mayor, probably reluctantly (as the municipal coffers won’t be getting a huge influx of income from licences etc) said that the land would return to agricultural use. However, he also announced that they will start working on a new municipal development plan… *fiendish cackle heard off stage*
Anyway, this outcome doesn’t mean that Azucarera Larios can’t put forward a new development project within the limits of the new stricter law, but it does mean that they will probably be a tad more reluctant, perhaps.
