Rules Dam Releases Water

Vélez de Benaudalla Town Hall has activated a prevention & monitoring protocol due to a potential rise in the Guadalfeo River caused by water releases from the Rules Dam.

Yes, the reservoir is only 74% full but they are dumping water, which can only be for keeping the water level away from where they are working on the bridge support column.

Mayor Francisco Gutiérrez clarified that no official warnings have been issued yet and that the measures taken on a municipal leverl are purely precautionary as no residents have been forced to leave their homes.

However, he did suggest that if the Rules Dam does release a larger volume of water, it might be necessary to recommend evacuations down at the level of the river, where there are cortijos and farmed land.

There is also the uncertainty stemming from the ongoing pipe-laying work on the riverbed, which has altered the water’s natural path and raised concerns about its behaviour if the flow increases.

The most problematic area is the Barranco de las Viñas, where six families currently reside in cortijos within the flood zone.
