Maro Golf Stalled

The urban-development plans for the Maro vega have ground to a halt due to a discrepancy between the Junta de Andalucia and the development company.

If the plan goes ahead, there will be a golf course, 500 dwellings and three hotels on approximately 200 hectares of fertile plain (vega) but there is plenty of opposition to this plan.

The land belongs to the Sociedad Azucarera Larios which until now has leased out this agricultural land to nearly 400 leaseholders. However, even though the development plan has stalled, the company is terminating these agricultural lease contracts.

The project remains stalled following an initial progress document on strategic environmental processing, published in 2023, due to a discrepancy between the Junta de Andalucía and the company’s legal services.

The dispute centres upon whether to follow the framework of the Law for the Promotion of Territorial Sustainability of Andalusia (LISTA) or a modification to the current planning under the previous LOUA, under which the project was initially conceived. This situation has led the Nerja Town Council to wait for a definitive ruling from the Junta before proceeding with the processing.

On the land there are plastic greenhouses and cultivated field at the moment, as well as dwellings (cortijos) but even so, many feel that if they slap down 500 luxury homes and three hotels, the last relatively virgin part of the Axarquia coastline will disappear.

Editorial comment: the Mayor, having dodged the bullet (incredibly) over the illegal dump in Maro, is very keen on the project owing to the revenue it will bring into the municipal coffers. It is reminiscent of what happened to the last virgin coastline between Velilla and Playa Cabría in Almuñécar when they slapped down hundreds of flats and a hotel (Playacálida) burying a rolling hillside covered in grass and olive groves.
