Poofs, Priests & Saints

The Granada law courts are investigating the priest in Peligros for an alleged hate crime, after receiving a complaint from a man last March.

The complaint entails alleged homophobic incidents towards Miguel Iván; a resident of the town who, on Thursday night at home, had his front door set on fire, where he lives with his husband Alberto, a municipal councillor.

This all kicked off, it appears, because Miguel Iván lent a religious relic that he owns (of Saint Ildefonso) which he had lent to the church on previous occasions for processions. Apparently the relic owner and the priest fell out over it.

Allegedly, the priest told Miguel Ívan, “Poofs have no place in the Church;” “I’ll destroy the relic before I let a poof walk off with it,” and “What’s a faggot doing washing tablecloths?”

As a consequence, the court has taken statements from several people and is awaiting further statements from other witnesses whose names were put forward by the victim.

It should also be noted that this same priest is being investigated by the Court of Instruction Number 2 in Granada for alleged threats and sexual assault. The woman, who filed the complaint last May, claims that the clergyman asked her for oral sex and threatened her as she left Mass.
