Paseo de Las Explanadas

Motril Town Council is accelerating the work on Paseo de Las Explanadas with the goal of fully reopening it to the public before the end of this month.

This work, which has been going on at a snail’s pace, should have been finished in November, but like just about every public work anywhere in Andalucía, it dragged on past the official termination date.

So, the Mayor wants it ready for Christmas. Remember that there are twelve days to Christmas, ending on the 6th of January… hint, hint!

Councilor José Balderas explained, “We will establish pedestrian access from Avenida Salobreña to the promenade; from the pedestrian crossing to Calle Ferrocarril, in the direction of the high school; and also from the paseo to Avenida de Nuestra Señora de la Cabeza, although that section remains closed.”

Access to Calle Alonso Terrón and the area where the bar terraces are located is already open.

Balderas said that the most delayed part of the project is the landscaping, especially the planting of new grass and the gardened areas.

“It will be planted in the coming days, but if we were to open it right now, people would walk on the ground and the grass wouldn’t have time to take root. The idea is to give it time to grow properly,” he offered.

One thing is it being opened and another thing altogether will be the official inauguration which will be timed, no doubt to get in before the Regional Elections for the Junta – the Mayor’s party heads the Junta at the moment. The same sort of timing will no doubt be employed over Almuñecar’s Municipal Market for its Auguration.

So what has caused the delays on the Explanadas? The Head of the Municipal Infrastructure Department said that the project’s development “has been difficult.” Apparently, during the work, they came across hidden manholes, old basements, and persistent leaks in the garages of the adjacent buildings, which required the implementation of large-scale technical solutions. “We’ve had to waterproof, build walls, and fill in spaces we weren’t aware of,” he explained.

Another set back of around half a month was when the construction company that was supposed to lay the paving stones dropped out. The Municipal Department Head said that there is a shortage of skilled workers in the construction sector, a situation that is affecting a large portion of the construction projects currently underway in town, he claimed.

Finally, another reason the Town Hall is desperate to get it finished before the year is out is because 2025 also marks the 180th anniversary of the Town Hall’s acquisition of this land from the main church across the road.
