Obelisk Stands on New Base

Motril's controversy-causing obelisk now stands in its new location, the roundabout at the entrance to the town via Camino de las Ventillas.

Standing 20 metres high and weighing nearly 20 tonnes, it was lowered into place with great care on the roundabout near the Plaza de Toros, using a huge, mobile, construction crane, with a longer boom than the one previously used to take it down.

The Motril Policía Local closed off the road, coordinated detours, and kept the area clear whilst the crane slowly lifted the structure. The manoeuver, carried out with millimeter precision, ended with the monument being lowered onto the new anchor plates that had been fixed to the roundabout’s foundation days earlier.

The crane remained in place until the piece was completely welded to its base plate that had been set into the roudabout’s foundations. Spotlights will also be placed at the base to make it more visible and highlight its presence at night.

A decision has yet to be made about what will be installed in the space it previously occupied. However, the possibility of installing a fountain was mentioned at one point, the councilor admitted that the idea has become complicated due to the “very small” space available.
