Almuñécar is getting closer to opening the doors of its new Municipal Market; a project that is now "practically finished," according to the Town Council.
Mayor Juanjo Ruiz Joya confirmed that the construction company has already installed almost all of the stalls, which number 44. He explained that if everything continues at the current pace, the market’s interior will be completely finished before the end of this month. *Gasp!*

Obtaining electricity from Endesa & Sevillana is a lengthy process which the Town Council has been working on for months, apparently. Once this final hurdle is overcome, the opening date, still scheduled for early next year, can be announced.
The mayor said that they had already met with the original stallholders and each of the stalls was assigned by using a lottery system. He says that everybody who did use to run a stall has been taken into consideration. If any stalls haven’t been claimed, then they will be put out to tender
Meanwhile, on the outside, final touches are carried out, such as installing planters and the side facing Avenida Europa is being resurfaced.
The mayor insists that the new market will not only be a place to shop, but a true meeting point for residents, with two separate entrances and a large, convenient parking facilities.
Editorial comment: The Mayor is convinced that the economic impact on the town will be greater than people currently imagine. He had better hope so. Some might not consider so, owing to the economic devastation caused to surrounding businesses by the whole process of closing it, demolishing it and getting a new one built.
