We ran an article on May the 13th, 2024 about plans to modify the N-340 where it passes through the centre of Torrenueva Costas. Since then, not a sausage!

Although the project was definitively approved by the Ministry of Transport in May 2024; hence our article, the tender for the works has been postponed and is expected to be put out to tender in 2026 due to delays related to a change in funding.

Mayor Plácido Lara, explained that they had had a meeting last wednesday with the Central Government’s provincial representative, the Subdelegate in Granada, José Antonio Montilla, who broke the news to him that “due to planning and budgetary adjustments, the tender is scheduled for 2026.”

In fact, he assured that it was not on hold but was advancing slowly (much like ‘honesty’ amongst our leaders). What’s more, the provincial bigwig swore that the project was “guaranteed.”

Now, the money for this project comes from the EU (surprise!) as part of its Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan (RTRP) and was included in the General State Budget, as RTRP projects must be completed by mid-2026. Problems with funding? What have they done with the scheckles, you might wonder.

The project, with an estimated budget of €4 million, plans to cover approximately two kilometres of the N-340 as it passes through the urban area of ​​Torrenueva Costa, between kilometre points 336 and 338. It will include a roundabout at KP 336, and new pavements and “landscaped areas” to blend the road into the urban landscape. Oh, and the retarmacking of the road. The hard shoulders will be reduced to “slow traffic down, making it safer for pedestrians and cyclists.”

Once the works are completed, on the N-340 where it goes through the municipality, it will become the property and responsibility of the Town Hall.

Mayor Lara pointed out that some land has already been expropriated so that the works can be carried out when they are put out to tender.
