Hell on The Roads Day!

The DGT will activate 'Operación Especial de Tráfico 15 de Agosto' today at 15.00h. Anybody silly enough to want to be on the roads to the coast will be dragged out their car and shot... just joking!

But the lead up to the 15th of August on Costa Tropical will be anything but a joke with the DGT calculating 176,000 road journeys on the provincial roads, connecting with the coast.

This is because, besides being the biggest day for Almuñécar with its fiestas, it is also the fortnight turn-over for those who have spent the first two weeks on the coast and will be returning, crossing with those about to start their 2-week holiday there.

The traffic police have also factored in the number of drivers who will be tempted to drink-drive, returning home in the early hours on secondary roads.

The traffic police will be using mobile, speed cameras in unmarked vehicles, including vans and even motorbikes, as well as helicopters and drones over the roads.

Of course, the extra-lane system will be in full use with lanes divided by cones. Remember that if you do decide to take the extra lane, the maximum speed is 80 kph, so you can forget about 120 kph.

All roadworks will be put on hold and lorries will suffer restrictions on certain stretches of roads.

You can find out more information on the DGT website. The airborne units, beside tracking errant drivers, will also be providing traffic-conditions information to the Centros de Gestión de Tráfico.
