It’s Salobreña’s Turn

The area of Salobreña beaches known as La Charca has been closed to bathing after intestinal enterococci, fecal bacteria was detected in the water.

Further down the coast in Carchuna their beach was hit twice with this problem in July leaving beach businesses reeling.

The affected area in Salobreña is the stretch of beach between the western end and El Molino, which is between 100 and 250 metres, more or less.

The ban came into being on Thursday after water-quality results came back showing this presence and the closure will continue until further tests are taken that give negative results.

Mayor Javier Ortega Prados expressed his annoyance with the situation as it is beyond the control of the Town Hall, or better said, it is not within their grasp to do anything about it. He has also threatened legal action against each administration involved in allowing this to happen. He was referring to Costas, Mancomunidad or the Delegación de Salud (Junta) who, in his opinion, act if this has had nothing to do with them.

Editorial comment: on Playa La Charca this is a stream of water running under the road and down to the sea and it is horrifying to see parents being quite happy to let their children play in this water as if it were a paddling-pool area.

Prior to this beach closure, we were sent the following photo and video

Why is shit ending up in the sea just off the beach at Salobrena? Who’s to blame? Are those responsible being chased and prosecuted? What action is being taken to clear it up and ensure it never happens again?
