Moroccan Police on Costa

A detachment of Moroccan police, the Royal Moroccan Gendarmerie, were patrolling along the Costa Tropical alongside the Guardia civil earlier this month.

The joint patrols, which ran from the 14th to the 18th, were brought about as a dissuasive measure in the fight against the drug trade and illegal-immigrant landings along out coast. It also took place to increase cooperation between the two national police forces in general.

This isn’t a new thing as the first one was in 2004 and has continued since then, except when the Covid pandemic interrupted the normal course of things.

In a reciprocal exchange officers from the Guardia Civil have taken part in joint patrols on the Moroccan side of the Med since 2008.

This year the joint patrols have taken place on land in patrol cars, on sea in the Guardia Civil marine service onboard Río Genil and in the air using the Guardia Civil helicopters based in Armilla (Granada).

The Moroccan officers have also worked alongside their Guardia Civil counterparts in Customs duties within Motril Port.

Come December, it will be the turn of Guardia Civil officers to work in the North African city of Alhucemas with the Royal Moroccan Gendarmerie.
