Almuñécar bus station is the first impression that visitors who arrive by bus have of the town, and it's not pretty, some claim.
Certain aspects of the building are beginning to look a bit ropey, according to the left-wing, opposition party, the IU.

Their spokesperson claims that they have been bringing this to the attention of the ruling party since 2012, when they suggested that the Mayor got onto the national bus company (Alsa) which runs the bus station to put right the deficiences.
Readers might remember that there was a similar problem with the reasonably recent construction of the Motril bus station, concerning a leaking roof.
The IU claims that not only have the deficiencies in the Almuñécar bus station not been rectified, but rather they have got worse.
There have been complaints from passengers about a lack of seating, especially outside, so passengers have to stand whilst they wait for their bus. The state of the public toilets; there are no seats on the toilet bowls (hardly a rarity in Spain) and that the washrooms in general are not cleaned; there are no locks on the toilet-cubicle doors and most of the urinals are unserviceable and covered over.
Furthermore, the bus station is closed up for many hours, so people can’t get in to use the toilets, even if they were working. There is not information, the IU claims, to say when the building is closed and when it is open.
Finally, there is no Tannoy system to announced the imminent arrival or departures of buses.
For all of the above reasons, the IU hopes that the Town Hall will do something about it because this state of affairs is unforgiveable in a town that lives from tourism

Reader’s comment: “A digital announcement board would be nice and not a noisy tanoy. Part of the issue are the vagrants and people who claim to be homeless. If it’s private property they need to be moved on unless they have a ticket or are meeting someone.” – Paul Tisconia
Reader’s comment: “was there not a story some time ago about plans to build a new bus station in the parking area used by many trucks just opposite the stadium? What happened to that idea?” – Howard Green
That area is now destined to be a small green park. I don’t recall there being plans to build a new bus station there or in any other part because, believe it or not, the present building is the ‘new‘ bus station. The old one was at the bottom of Avenida Costa del Sol, where it meets La Carrera de Concepción, more or less where the Springfield shop is. I just wish I had taken more photos of Almuñécar, back then in the earely 80s – Martin
