Popular Bird Park

One of the main attractions in Almuñécar is the Parque Ornitológico Loro Sexi, better simply known as the Bird Park.

As proof of its popularity, 20,500 visitors passed through its gates last year, between those of curious tourists, locals and organised school visits. Admittedly, its easier to get school kids into the park than it is to get them out and most avian inmates must breath a sigh of relief when the gates close for the day.

The Councillor for Parques y Jardines, Carlos Ferrón, is a happy bunny with these figures and said, “These installations, which have a quite few years in existence, are in a continual state of improvement.”

Amongst the work that’s been carried out there is a new area for tortoises. A tortoise does seem to be the polar opposite of a bird, but never mind, unless they have a feathered variety that nest in the trees… But then again, they do have ring-tailed lemurs, too.

They have also spruced up the gardened areas, especially in the cactus park, which the Councillor suggests is one of the most popular areas within the installations. I would have thought dive-bombing tortoises would be pretty popular, as well.

The Councillor says that all the birds are in splended health. Rumours that there is a smell of roast chicken coming from the park are spurious.

All joking aside, during July and August it is open seven days a week, from 10.00h to 13.30h and 18.00h to 21.00h. Price: four euros for adults and two euros for kids (4-to-12) and over 65s. Tel: 958 882 735/ 615 321 462. Email reservasparqueszoologicos@almunecar.es
