The Motril branch of the leftwing Izquierda Unida has requested that the Motril law courts get a move on with the Mayor Chamorro case, which began three years ago.
Mayor Chamorro stands accused of misappropriation of public funds; funds belonging to her party’s local coffers to the tune of 12,152 euros to cover her private legal costs.
The IU considers that this delay caused by numerous postponements, not only undermines confidence in the judicial system but also prolongs a state of uncertainty, which “affects our town and the right of the people of Motril to transparent administration.”
The preliminary hearing scheduled for last month was postponed due to the need to incorporate bank documentation and assess, as well, the potential inclusion of a witness and has no new trial date set.
“This lack of urgency and transparency regarding the 2,031 euros that the judge considers as unjustified, fuels the perception that the process is inexcusably slowing down, allowing García Chamorro to remain in her position without providing clear accountability for her actions as Mayor of Motril,” said the IU Spokesperson.
The IU also considers that a person under suspicion of misappropriation of public funds should not be overseeing a municipal budget for 2025 of over 64m euros.
Furthermore, the Mayor, the IU points out, receives a gross annual salary of 72,000 euros, which was approved in June 2023 following a 19% increase from the previous 53,000 euros, which is even more than the Prime Minister of the Junta de Andalucia gets as a salary. The Vice Mayors also got a 31% pay rise, increasing their salaries from 40,000 euros per annum to 59,000 euros. They see this as completely “disproportionate” and a slap in the face for Motrileño families who are struggling economically.
