EU Norm on Smart Phones Etc

As of last Friday, the 20th of June, a new EU regulation entered into force that affects mobiles and tablets.

This new EU Eco-design & energy-labelling rules apply to smartphones, cordless phones and tablets placed on the EU market.

The good news is that the norm aims to increase the product lifespan, energy efficiency, and ease of repair. Furthermore, the measures will also help consumers make informed choices when purchasing one of these devices.

The move is designed to cut down on energy consumption by at least 2.2 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity by 2030. It also aims to save consumers €20 billion in expenses by that date.

The Eco-design Regulation lays out minimum requirements for mobile phones, cordless phones and tablets to be sold on the EU market to ensure greater resistance to drops, scratches, dust and wate and the use of more durable batteries, capable of at least 800 charge cycles while retaining at least 80% of their initial capacity.

As mentioned above, the EU norm establishes clear rules concerning disassembly and repair, requiring manufacturers to supply key spare parts within 5-10 working days, and for at least seven years after the product model is no longer sold in the EU.

But it doesn’t stop there because it also obliges software companies to provide longer availability of their operating system updates; at least five years from the date the last unit model is sold.

What else? For the first time, products placed on the EU market will also need to display a repairability score. The score, from A (most repairable) to E (least repairable), will appear on the label with other key details to help extend product lifespans for consumers.

The proposed energy label and accompanying product information will be made available through the publicly available EPREL database. The label itself, together with the product information sheet, will be easy to download, enabling users to make a fully informed purchasing decision.
