A total of thirteen beaches along the Costa Tropical have been awarded the Blue-Flag Award by the Asociación de Educación Ambiental y del Consumidor.
This organisation was founded in 1984 by members of the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), which is a not-for-profit, non-governmental organisation, consisting of more than 100 organisations belonging to 81 countries.

The Delegate for Tourism, Culture, and Sport, David Rodríguez, attended the flag-raising ceremony on beaches belonging to Calahonda, Torrenueva Costa, Almuñécar, and Salobreña, where he congratulated the municipalities for their achievement.
The beaches are: Playa Granada, Carchuna and Calahonda (Motril) Marina del Este (La Herradura) Puerta del Mar, San Cristóba and Velilla (Almuñécar) Sotillo-Castell, and Cambriles (Castell de Ferro) La Guardia (Salobreña), Del Cañon, La Pelá, and Torrenueva (Torrenueva Costa).
These Banderas Azules are awarded at the regional, national, and international levels and are based on environmental information and education, water quality, environmental management, safety, and services.

Reader’s comment: “The slimy streak that floats just offshore on most, if not all, of the Costa Tropical beaches, is also obviously not taken into account!” – John Ashley
Reader’s comment: “How the heck did Salobrena get a blue flag for its beach when people are swimming in fecal waste just off it?” – John Woodward-Roberts
Reader’s comment: “Totally agree with both previous comments. In this day and age there must be a way of monitoring all water ways that lead to the sea in Salobrena and then locate the source of any sewage or other contamination. Salobrena is a great place to live and has many plus points, however cleanliness is definitely not one of them. Dirty seas and Dirty Streets, both of which are easily dealt with if the Powers in Charge conduct themselves as they should.” – Shiner
