Parking Bid Accepted

Almuñécar Town Council has awarded the lease of the underground parking beneath the new municipal market to Empark.

This company, which will hand over 3,750,000 euros to the municipal coffers, already runs public parking facilities in Granada, Málaga, Almería and Madrid.

The Leasing Board, presided over by Councillor Rafael Caballero, evaluated the three bids put forward and judged them by the terms stipulated in the tender document: number of employees, bid sum, 24-hour service, etc.

Editorial comment: This sum of money gets them a 25-year lease… that’s the equivalent of the next six municipal legislatures. Hell, I’ll be 93-years old when that lease runs out so the lease is likely to last longer than me! So, just so the present Town Council can get their hands on that amount of money now, they’ve sold off the next quarter of a century! Surely a 10 or 12-year-lease would have been more reasonable?

By my reckoning that’s 150,000 per annum, or 3000 (approx) per week. Pretty cheap compared to a restaurant or shop lease, also adjusted for inflation over 25 years it’s peanuts. Who is going to be responsible for ongoing maintenance of the structure and infrastructure? If it’s the lessee fair enough, but if it’s the council (effectively the taxpayer – you and me) it could rapidly become a very expensive white elephant.
