Paracetamol Alert

A new warning from a pharmaceutical company is putting people who regularly consume paracetamol on alert.

Taking this medication in high doses can be harmful. This painkiller, sold in pharmacies without a prescription, is one of the most harmful medications for the liver, according to the specialised magazine Health Village.

According to pharmacists, the maximum recommended daily dose is three grams, and exceeding this could cause health problems in sensitive patients. It should only be exceeded if prescribed by a doctor.

Hanna Ylä-Rautio, pharmacist and medication safety coordinator at the International Federation of Pharmacists (FIP) in Finland, warns that an overdose of the drug can lead to death.

“When the medication is taken for more than four days, the risk of liver disease increases, and in the worst case, an overdose of paracetamol can even cause death,” she comments in Health Village.

The publication also warns that “if you consume a lot of alcohol, you should be especially careful with painkillers,” which “are also not recommended for hangovers.” “Paracetamol, along with alcohol, is even more harmful to the liver, because both put pressure on it,” expert emphasizes.

They also point out, however, that there’s no need to be afraid of these possible liver effects; just “be cautious when consuming it.” “Paracetamol is a safe painkiller when used in the recommended doses,” the pharmacist concludes.
