During a Plenary Meeting of the Almuñécar Town Council in April 2024, the IU put forward a motion for the asbestos used in the old Tropical-Fruits warehouse to be removed.
This motion was unanimously approved with the IU emphasising that this task must be carried out immediately, rather than delayed further, in order to comply with the Ley de Residuos y Suelos Contaminados, which came into force in April, 2022.

The warehouse building, which has stood unoccupied many years, is just behind the N-340 gasolinera junction, on the back lane that connects with the San Sebastian/Otivar Road.
The motion contained the following points:
01) The Town Council will prepare an inventory of public & private buildings containing asbestos as soon as possible.
02) The Town Council will prepare a plan of action to eliminate any asbestos components that may be present in public buildings.
03) The Town Council will establish a Municipal Aid Plan to facilitate the removal of fibre cement (asbestos) installations in private buildings.
04) The City Council will include on its website the necessary information to allow citizens to identify buildings containing asbestos and the steps to follow for the removal of these materials.
IU party Spokesman, Francisco Fernández, said, “Fortunately, the motion was unanimously approved on the 25th of April, 2024 but a year has passed and as far as we know the governing party has done nothing to implement it; thus removing dangerous material”
He commented: “So we ask that the law that came into force three years ago be finally acted upon in Almuñécar and La Herradura.”
