After more than 15 years of waiting, work resumed on Salobreña's mains-water system by getting the Matagallares water-storage tank into service.
This has been thanks to a deal signed between the Town Council and the UES3 Compensation Board: the UES3 is an area of the municipality through which pipes will have to be laid. The Compensation Board had previously refused to allow this.

Mayor Javier Ortega explained that with Matagallares online the old water-storage tank on Calle Antequera can be decommissioned, owing to its deteriorated structure.
He said that the work will be carried out in two stages, as during the summer work on the pipeline will be halted to avoid causing problems with traffic along the back road to La Caleta and La Guardia. After the summer, a decision will be taken on whether to demolish the Calle Antequera tank or not.
The Matagallares reservoir, which is located on Camino del Cementerio, has the capacity to store 20,000 cu/metres and was inaugurated in 2006.
