Ticks Every Wrong Box

A woman riding an electric scooter was injured in Vallarejo within the city of Granada today; she had used a pedestrian crossing whilst it was in red.

She was hit by a scooter, but this time a 49cc one, and sent flying, according to a Policía Local report on the accident.

Fortunately she was wearing a helmet, although arguably with nothing inside, when she: A: rode across a zebra crossing that is for pedestrians and not wheeled transport, and B) crossed when the crossing light was in red.

If that were enough, she was riding it in the dark with no lights, no reflective jacket and dressed in dark clothing.

Considering everything else, it’s amazing she had a helmet.

While cheap electric vehicles with no barrier to entry are a good thing transport-wise, it is a bit of a double-edged sword in that people are just hopping on them and going with absolutely no thought to consequences and no chance to gain road-sense safely.

The big thing here is that traffic just cannot cope with pedestrians moving at road speeds; which is what happens when people use these scooters on the path. there’s just no time to react and you get stuff like this happening. I suspect she was on the path because she had no lights.

Possibly some sort of information/education campaign might be useful here. There is a case to be made for limited use on the path (if the stretch of road is particularly dangerous, or if you’re bimbling along with your on-foot mates, for example); but pedestrians should absolutely have priority; speed should be *severely* curtailed; and let it be known that if you cross the road at scooter speeds, you’re probably going to get collected sooner or later.
