A-7 Bridge Accident

Even this morning there are still road-maintenance crews working on the A-7 bridge that goes over Río Guadalfeo after last night's accident involving a lorry.

An articulated lorry had tipped over and then burst into flames, according to emergency-coordination-centre (112) reports.

We spoke with Antonio who runs the Librería 1616 in Salobreña and lives in Lobres. He said that he had been watching TV when he heard the first bang; like somebody slamming a heavy door but then it was followed by a stronger detonation, which had him outside looking across at the bridge where there were flames.

When the loud explosion occurred, he thought that it might have been the quarry a few hundred metres away but quickly ruled that out as they don’t carry out blasting at night, which is why he went outside to investigate.

The fire service, the Guardia Civil and an ambulance were despatched to the scene of the accident when 112 received the alert at 22.00h (which is when Antonio heard the explosion).

The paramedics on board the ambulance attended to the 49-year-old driver, who was suffering from mild, smoke poisoning. They immediately gave him oxygen, which helped him regain normal breathing. Apart from that, he had no other injuries so he did not require hospital treatment.

Once the fire was out, road-maintenance crews began the lengthy task of removing the remains of the large lorry; a task which was still going on during the forenoon today.

We also had a chat with workers on the river pipeline, who have a storeyard more or less under the said bridge. Asked about a possible explosion, they said that they hadn’t heard that there had been one, and if there was, it was probably the tyres being destroyed by fire.
