The Bane of Easter Wax

Starting yesterday morning, Almuñécar's street-cleaning company has been busy with the extra task of trying to get the wax off pavements and road surfaces.

The wax comes from the candles carried by the Semana-Santa processions, despite there being immitation candles powered by batteries readily available, and despite the accidents provoked with pedestrians slipping over on the wax strewn along pedestrian streets and riders of 2-wheel transport falling off along the roads.

Almuñécar Town Hall turns a blind eye, or better said, permits this dangerous custom and shield’s itself from prosecution by putting up notices telling people to be careful on the now slippery surfaces.

Finally, of course, we will spend days and days putting up with the constant sound of squeeling tyres, not matter how slowly vehicles go.

Nobody is saying that there shouldn’t be Easter processions, but rather that they should use battery candles, as in the case of many towns and cities in Spain, where normal candles are forbidden for this use.
