Our Reservoirs

With this abnormal but very welome amount of rain that Spain has received, most autonomous regions have their reservoirs over 70% full on average.

In fact, Spain’s reservoirs haven’t had this much water accumulated since June 2016, nearly nine years ago, owing to this long period of drought that we have gone through.

Andalucía, has an average of 60% but the province of Granada only has 31.4%. Worse off, not surprisingly, is Almería which has an average 10.7% of its reservoir capacity filled.

The first figure represents Granada reservoirs’ storage capacity in hectometres and the second their accumulated capacity.
Beznar
: 53-45
Canales: 70-38
Colomera: 40-9
Cubillas: 14-7
El Portillo 31-23
Francisco Abellan: 58-11
Los Bermejales: 91-39
Negratin: 571-185
Quentar: 14-11
Rules: 111-69
San Clemente: 117-14

Interestingly, Beznar, which only has one source, stands at 45hm whereas Rules has 69hm, despite having two sources: Beznar Reservoir receives its water from Río Ízbor and Rules receives water from the Beznar Reservoir above it and from Río Guadalfeo into which the Alpujarra empties.

This could possibly be put down to the work on the Rules bridge pillar and that they are perhaps dumping water to stop the level reaching the worksite. If that is the case, after one of the wettest months of March in years, it is a tremendous waste of reserve water.
