Warships Visit Motril

Two Spanish frigates, the Victoria (F82) and the Numancia (F83) will stop over at Motril Port this weekend.

Both warships have been participating in a Nato naval exercise (Dynamic Mariner/Flotex-25 )and belong to the 41 Escuadrilla de Escoltas (Escort Squadron) based in Rota (Cádiz).

These warships are Santa-María class of guided-missile frigates of which there are six based on the USS Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigates. Spanish ships, however, have a slightly bigger beam and were built with a greater weight reserve for future improvements.

The ships will open to visits from the general public on Saturday the 5th from 16.00h to 19.00h and during Sunday the 6th from 10.00h to 13.00h and then 16.00h to 19.00h.

As for the Nato exercise, 5,000 service personnel and 30 warships from nine Nato countries are participating (Germany, Croatia, Spain, The USA, France, Greece, Italy, Portugal and Turkey). The Spanish submarine, Isaac Peral S81 is also participating.

Incidentally, Isaac Peral, a Spaniard, invented the first submarine in the 1880s that could operate underwater with a  reliable means of propulsion for the submerged vessel thanks to the advent of the necessary electric battery technology.
